Top 10 Photography Questions Clients Always Ask (With Honest Answers)

Whether you’re booking your first-ever photo session or you’ve done this a few times, it’s totally normal to have questions. From “What do we wear?” to “Can I have all the photos?”, I’ve pretty much heard it all.

So I figured it was time to round up the most common questions I get and answer them honestly to help you feel confident before you step in front of the camera.

1. What to Wear for a Portrait Session

This is the #1 question I get—and it makes total sense. Your outfits play a big role in how your photos feel, and it can get overwhelming fast.

Here’s my quick advice:

  • Stick to neutrals or earthy tones and avoid loud logos or super bold patterns.

  • Think coordinated, not matching (we’re not bringing back the denim-on-denim 2003 family look).

  • Dress for the season and location, but comfort > everything (especially with kids).

  • Bring options! Layers photograph well and give us some flexibility.

If you’re stuck between outfits? Text me a pic, I’ll help!

2. Do Photographers Retouch Photos? Here’s What I Do

If you're wondering whether I can edit out that one random person who walked into the background during your couples session, yep, I’ve got you.

If you’re hoping I can magically make a rainy-day session look like it was shot on a sunny Italian hillside... we may be pushing it.

Here’s the deal:

  • I always clean up temporary distractions like blemishes, stray hairs, or food smudges on shirts.

  • I don’t do heavy body retouching because I believe in capturing people as they are, beautiful and real.

  • If there’s something specific you’re worried about, just let me know ahead of time. I’m here to help you feel good in your photos, not overly edited.

3. Do You Get All the Photos from a Session? Here’s How It Works

Short answer: I deliver a full gallery of professionally edited images (usually around 50 photos) for you to view online.

Included in your session fee are (10 high-resolution digital downloads), depending on the session. You get to pick your favorites, and there’s always the option to purchase more or upgrade to the full gallery.

Why not just give them all away? Because editing every photo takes time, and I only deliver the best of the best, no duplicates, no test shots, no closed eyes. Think of it as a curated highlight reel of your session.

4. What Happens If It Rains on Photo Day?

For outdoor sessions, I always keep an eye on the forecast. If it’s calling for steady rain, high winds, or extreme temperatures, I’ll reach out 24–48 hours before to make a game plan. We can either:

  • Reschedule to a better day

  • Pivot to an indoor location

  • Embrace the chaos if it’s just a little drizzle and you’re down for it

Trust me, some of the best photos happen on unexpected days.

5. How Long Does It Take to Get Your Photos Back?

I know you’re excited to see your photos, and I don’t blame you. That’s why I always deliver a sneak peek of 3–5 images within 24 hours of your session.

The full gallery is ready within 2 weeks. I go through every photo, edit with care, and make sure everything feels cohesive and true to your vibe.

6. I’m Awkward,Do You Help Clients Pose for Photos?

YES. I’ve got you.

I don’t expect anyone to show up knowing how to pose, it’s literally my job to guide you. I’ll give you fun prompts, gentle direction, and silly things to do so that it feels natural instead of stiff. No cheesy prom poses, I promise.

You’ll laugh, move around, and probably forget you’re being photographed for half the session. That’s how the magic happens.

7. Tips for Family Photos When Kids Don’t Cooperate

I’ve worked with lots of little ones, and here’s the truth: the best photos often happen between the poses. A mid-laugh, a snuggle, a snack break, those are the moments we want.

I let kids warm up, follow their lead, and keep things fun. We’ll play games, take breaks, and roll with the chaos. I promise we’ll get beautiful shots, even if it feels like total mayhem in the moment.

Bring snacks, wipes, and a go-with-the-flow attitude, I'll handle the rest.

8. Can I Bring My Dog to My Photo Session? (Yes, Please!)

Your pup is part of the family, and I absolutely love when clients bring their dogs to sessions. Just make sure they’re on a leash and bring a treat or two.

Also: let me know ahead of time so I can pick a dog-friendly location!

9. What’s Your Rescheduling & Cancellation Policy?

If someone wakes up sick, a last-minute emergency pops up, or the weather isn’t cooperating, I totally understand.

Just give me as much notice as you can, and we’ll reschedule at no extra charge. The only thing I ask is that cancellations or no-shows without notice may forfeit the session fee, since I’ve set aside that time just for you.

Full details are in the contract, but I always aim to be as flexible and fair as possible.

10. How to Book a Portrait Session with Me (Step-by-Step)
