You’re engaged—cue the screams of joy, the champagne pops, and the flood of group texts from family and friends. You’re officially in that magical window of time between “Yes!” and “I do!”—and trust me, it goes by in a flash.
While you’re knee-deep in wedding planning (hello, Pinterest boards and cake tastings), there’s one thing you don’t want to skip: an engagement session.
Yep, we’re talking about a dedicated photo shoot to celebrate your love story before the wedding day. And if you’re a couple in New York or New Jersey? You’re sitting on a goldmine of beautiful locations, hidden gems, and skyline views that practically beg to be in the background of your photos.
Not sure if an engagement session is worth it? Here’s why every couple—yes, even the “we’re awkward on camera” ones—should absolutely do it.
1. It’s Not Just a Photoshoot—It’s a Celebration
You just got engaged! That alone is worth celebrating. An engagement session gives you a moment to slow down, soak it all in, and focus on what matters most: the two of you.
Between juggling work, planning timelines, and answering the age-old question “So when’s the wedding?”, an engagement shoot is a breath of fresh air. It’s a mini date with a camera tagging along—and honestly, it’s way more fun than you think.
2. Practice Makes (Almost) Perfect Photos
Unless you moonlight as a model, chances are you don’t spend your days posing for professional photos. That’s where the engagement session comes in clutch.
Think of it as a warm-up round before the big day. You’ll get used to being in front of the camera, learn how to relax and be yourselves, and figure out your “good side” (spoiler alert: they’re all good sides when you’re in love). Bonus: you’ll also get to know your photographer and see how they work—which means fewer nerves and more natural smiles come wedding time.
3. You’ll Actually Use the Photos (More Than You Think)
Engagement photos aren’t just for your Insta grid (although yes, they’ll look fire there too). You can use them for:
Save-the-dates
Wedding websites
Guest books
Decor at your reception
Prints for your home
Holiday cards
Or just to send your grandma something nice in the mail
And let’s be real—one day you’ll love having cute, non-wedding-day pics of you two that don’t involve tuxes, gowns, or a million guests watching.
4. They Capture You, Just as You Are
Wedding photos are stunning, emotional, and elegant. But engagement photos? They’re chill, they’re cozy, they’re you.
Maybe you're strolling hand-in-hand down the West Village, cozying up in a Hoboken café, or barefoot on the Jersey Shore at sunset. Engagement sessions show your everyday chemistry—your inside jokes, the way you look at each other when no one’s watching, your vibe as a couple.
It’s like pressing pause on real life and capturing that just us magic.
5. The Location Options Are Endless (and Epic)
Living in or near NYC and NJ means you have some seriously cool backdrops at your fingertips. Want urban and artsy? Head to DUMBO or the Meatpacking District. Prefer nature and quiet charm? Hello, South Mountain Reservation or the trails at Watchung.
A few local favorites for engagement sessions:
Central Park (iconic, for a reason)
Brooklyn Bridge at sunrise (trust me—it’s worth the early wakeup)
Hoboken waterfront (with those dreamy NYC skyline views)
Sandy Hook or Cape May (beachy vibes without a plane ticket)
Princeton University campus (ivy-covered romance, anyone?)
Liberty State Park (city views + open space = chef’s kiss)
There’s a perfect spot for every couple’s style—whether you're glam, casual, or somewhere in between.
6. You Get to Play Dress-Up (or Keep It Casual)
One of the best parts? You get to wear whatever feels right for you. Some couples dress to the nines, others keep it laid-back in jeans and cozy sweaters. Want to bring two outfits and do both? Go for it.
Your engagement session is all about expressing who you are—together. Matching sneakers, a flowy dress, bold colors, neutrals, whatever. No rules, just you two looking amazing.
7. It’s a Low-Key Way to Make Memories
Between the big wedding moments, there’s something beautiful about the in-between. Engagement sessions let you create memories without the pressure. No timelines, no audience, no bouquet to hold—just you, your partner, and me capturing all the sweetness ;)
Plus, it doubles as an actual date. Grab dinner after, make a day of it, or sneak in a coffee beforehand. You'll be laughing, goofing off, and probably forgetting the camera’s even there.
8. You’ll Build a Connection With Your Photographer
This one is underrated but so important. Your photographer is with you all day on your wedding—from getting ready to your final dance. Building a bond during your engagement session makes everything smoother and more fun when the big day rolls around.
It’s like meeting a friend in advance who just happens to have a camera and some killer posing tips.
9. These Moments Don’t Last Forever—But the Photos Will
The engagement period flies by. One minute you're celebrating with friends, the next you’re finalizing seating charts and writing vows. Engagement photos freeze time for just a little while.
Years down the road, you’ll look at those images and remember exactly how it felt: the excitement, the butterflies, the “I can’t wait to marry you” energy. It’s a gift you’re giving your future selves—and maybe your future kids too.
10. You Will Not Regret It
Here’s the truth: no one ever says, “Man, I wish we didn’t take engagement photos.” But people do say, “I wish we had.”
It’s a fun, beautiful way to kick off your wedding story and document this once-in-a-lifetime moment. And when you’re snuggled up on the couch years from now, flipping through your album with a glass of wine and a smile, you’ll be so glad you did it.
